CLEVELAND, OH (March, 2008) – St. Patrick’s Day is well known as the one day that everyone is at least a little Irish. And overwhelmingly, the one way that most Americans show off their proud (if not inherited) Irish heritage is by flashing some green.
Nearly 83 percent of all consumers plan to wear green to help celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, this year falling on Monday, March 17. But in addition to wearing green, festive celebrants will also be shelling out some green. The National Retail Federation estimates that the average consumer will spend almost $35 to get into the proper Irish spirit.
So where are these green clad consumers spending their money?
More than 30 percent will go full bore on the big day and celebrate with friends and family at a party, dinner or by going to a parade. For those that might not be able to make it out, there are still ways to celebrate.

In addition to sending cards, another way to celebrate a little more casually is through decoration. In fact, nearly 22 percent of all consumers will be partaking in some kind of decoration this year. And a good majority of these celebrants will practicing the widely popular tradition of making St. Patrick’s Day a wearable holiday by decorating themselves.
From a court jester Irish hat, a special VIP (Very Irish Person) sash and a full leprechaun beard (complete with ears) to more subtle touches such as Irish-inspired earrings, bracelets and mini buttons, you can find whatever you need to celebrate in your own way this year.
