Cleveland, Ohio (January 2008) – Black History Month is a time to reflect on the proud history of the culture, and share with others messages of inspiration and hope. To help encourage these activities this year, American Greetings has expanded its selection of cards for Black History Month featuring all new personalities and collections.
New offerings this year include the second year of the popular Ebony Inspirations series, a special set of cards featuring the “Greatest of All Time,” Muhammad Ali, and motivational messages from renowned Bishop T.D. Jakes.
Ebony Inspirations
The Ebony Inspirations collection debuted in 2007 to great praise from consumers. The unique cards featured cover art from the 62-year history of the influential publication, along with brief bios on the eight historical figures and events commemorated. This year, new covers and stories will be shared as part of a 12-card line.
Historic covers featured on the cards commemorate former Secretary of State Colin Powell, actor/comedian Redd Foxx, civil and human rights activist Dr. Betty Shabazz, tennis legend Arthur Ashe, entertainers Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, boxing champ Joe Lewis and the historic cover honoring the 1963 March on Washington.
“The first collection of Ebony Inspirations really resonated with consumers,” said Paul Palmer, Director of Ethnic Card Marketing at American Greetings. “We wanted to build on that positive energy with a new offering that included even more influential figures from our history. The new cards feature fascinating people who have been instrumental in shaping not only the African American culture but the country we live in today.”
Muhammad Ali
“The Greatest of All Time” has always been quick to share his wisdom, and now consumers can do the same. American Greetings has unveiled a new card line that features legendary boxer and social activist Muhammad Ali to help celebrate Black History Month.
“Being able to offer cards featuring Muhammad Ali for Black History Month is thrilling,” said Palmer. “Ali is such a great example of striving to reach your dreams, and the cards really capture the inspiration and motivation that he represents.”

Gentle Guidance and Inspirational Messages by T.D. Jakes
C.E.O, generous philanthropist, widely respected pastor and best-selling author Bishop T.D. Jakes is bringing his inspirational message of guidance and hope to the greeting card aisle this Black History Month. A new eight-card collection from American Greetings features notable quotes from Bishop Jakes, along with corresponding biblical passages and greetings to reflect his sentiments of strength and support.
Bishop Jakes has been cited as one of the country’s most influential Christian leaders by Time Magazine, and his passion to better the lives of everyone he touches is clearly evident. His boundless energy and optimism are ideal for a time when African Americans are asked to examine what they can do for their families and their communities.
“Bishop Jakes is the epitome of soul,” said Palmer. “His words just give you a warm feeling inside and make you feel better about any situation or challenge. His voice is one that we are very excited to have as part of our collection.”
